Connexion Printing Consultants : : 2011 Calendar

J.C. Nore of Connexion Printing Consultants asked me to work with him on a 2011 calendar for his clients. The challenge of this project was to create something that was functional yet beautiful. J.C. had the idea of converting a standard calendar into a ring and placing a linear calendar on the bottom. He also wanted to incorporate key events here in Bend, OR since there currently is no other tool providing that. At the core of his direction was to create a piece of art that clients would want on their wall.

I took J.C.'s direction and worked out a system of colored bars representing the months, leaving space for the events listed, and allowing clients to add events important to their industry. J.C. and I also worked in a bunch of print geeky things into the calendar. He is naturally drawn to the golden ration so we changed the standard 24x18 poster size to 24x15. The three rings, which come for J.C.'s brand identity are 24, 15, and 9 inches in diameter; all of with follow the golden ratio. Finally, we set each of the colors in ring to be exactly 30 degrees from the next on the color wheel.

J.C. has been so helpful in many of my print projects and is amazing to work with. I recommend him to everyone needing print services. He also produces a great daily collection of his favorite articles: The J.C. Nore Daily. You should check it out.

Kelly Electric : : Branding

I was able to have the pleasure of re-branding and developing new print collateral for Jim Kelly of Kelly Electric. Jim is sincerely one of the most honest, genuine, and giving persons I have known and it was an honor to give him updated tools for his business.

First of all, Jim is an old-school electrician; in a good way. He is honest, does great work, and is truly hands-on in all his work. I wanted to bring this into the company's new identity, emphasizing the trustworthiness of a company that has decades of experience. He may be old school in style, but he is definitely not out of touch with what is going on in industry today. The point of this re-brand was to show just that. I kept a very traditional look to the identity, but with notes to contemporary style, showing that they are still fully "in the game" today. I threw in the year of establishment to push the history a little bit more.

Kelly Electric has always used a shamrock icon, but I updated it a little and added in electrical bolts into the negative space between the leaves and stem to add more depth.

Finally, Jim asked me to add lines to his letter head since he usually hand writes his correspondence and invoices; like I said, Jim is an old-school electrician. Jim also hand draws many of his schematics. To assist him in this, I added a dot grid to his stationary to lessen the strain that lines would put on the eyes as well as protect Jim from having others steal his work by photocopy it. The dot grid was easily transfered into all aspects of his print collateral for greater brand continuity and recognition.

Sam and Lana Fox - Wedding

The Backbone Chocolate Espresso Stout

Boneyard Beer approached Backporch Coffee Roasters a few weeks back with the idea to collaborate on an espresso stout and since we have done all of the recent design work for Backporch we were honored to be able to work on this project. Boneyard was kind enough to allow Backporch the ability to help name the beer and even contribute on the recipie. This is what collaboration should look like friends.

Since this beer was going to feature Backporch's espresso we wanted to combine the style of Backporch's espresso labels we had previously worked on with the tattoo and biker style of Boneyard Beer's labels. This lead us to think "What would a Soviet biker gang's back piece look like?" You will notice that many of the elments of Backporch's labels are reapplied here to further tie in the connection between the two.

Last nigh was the official release of The Backbone at the soon to be opened new Backporch location which will feature the new roasting facility. We were able to snap a few pictures of the labels and shirts for you guys.

Backporch Coffee Roasters

I am more than partial to Backporch Coffee Roasters in Bend, OR. My love for them oozes out of me, thick like perfectly pulled espresso. Over the past few months Jeremy and Dave have had me working on some design projects for the company. First was developing artwork for each of the three espressos that they carry. The concept for these was built on the catchphrase used for ICON single origin espresso. "For the people" addresses the two purposes for the ICON project; highlighting the exceptional work of the growers and educating people on quality origin coffee. This lead to a propaganda influenced design featuring key elements of espresso prepartaion.

The next project was developing the label used for direct trade coffees. The concept was very direct on this project. I waned to highlight the "striat from the farm" concept while making it match on a shelf next bags with other similar labels.

The final project was the labels for the hoppers in all the grocery stores that carry Backporch Coffee Roasters. The information for each origin was standardized so people could easily compare different coffees without the assistance they would receive in shop.

Back in May I flew out to Pittsburgh, PA to shoot one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever been to; the wedding of none other than Douglas Cook to Ashley North and the formation of the North Cook family.

Doug has been one of my closest friends since my college days. He has always been incredibly supportive of me and his creativity and determinedness is inspiring. One day Doug met Ashley and he became an even better man. I did not have the pleasure of meeting her until the week of the wedding, but in that week I was blown away. They are two of the most amazing people I have ever met. Capturing their gorgeous and touching wedding was a sincere honor.

And this wedding! It was on the side of a knee-high grassed rolling mountain with miles until the next peak. Ashley even made her dress and Doug's vest. These guys seriously walked in to everyone in attendance singing an accapella and claps version of "This Must be the Place" by the Talking Heads and closed it with a congrational singing of "Down to the River to Pray" as made popular by "Oh Brother, Where art Thou?" It was amazing...

James and Amy are a couple of great friends of ours who recently had us shoot some engagement photos for them. James is an adventure guide/photographer so we went up to Sparks Lake in the Cascade Mountains for what lead to be the of the most epic engagement shoots to date. James works for Wanderlust Tours here in Bend, Oregon and can set you up with all kinds of crazy guided adventures. I promise you that you will learn so much and laugh even more.

Rootdown Gig Poster

Rootdown is coming to Bend again and the Kilns is hosting them. For this poster I wanted to highlight the reggae rock party aspect of the band. I went with a personified ghetto blaster holding up a poster to promote the show. I painted the bands name to make it look like the ghetto blaster made the poster himself.

Live at the Kilns Vol. One

After an amazing run of concerts in 2009 at the Kilns Bookstore we were able to put together an outstanding disk featuring some of the best tracks from the series recorded live. When it came to developing a concept for the album packaging I knew it had to focus on the venue itself since the musical acts were so diverse. I decided to hand illustrate the packing and focus on the unique architectural elements of the space. For the cover we simply drew the front exterior of the building but replaced the store's sign with the album title. On the interior we featured the exposed ventilation and the pipes and meters from the front side of the building. To separate the track title from the artists on the back we used the exposed wiring's tubing and faceplate.

After the illustration was done we took a printed copy and painted in key elements of the illustration to add more complexity, color, and texture. After that was complete we scanned in the painting and inserted it below the illustration giving a sense that the paint and illustration we applied right to the disk and packaging. For all of the text we used Tapscott from YouWorkForThem because of its illustrative nature and unique interaction between adjoining letterforms. We did have to customize the typeface a little bit were combinations we wanted we lacking, but overall it was an amazing font to work with.

Muffintop Records

I did some work recently for my friends over at Muffintop Records using illustrations by the amazing Tom Monson. Tom is an illustration genius and I love his work. Justin needed business cards made for his employees as well as a flashier twitter page. We decided to turn the cards vertical and take Tom's Indie Muffintop Man and slap him on there like he was standing on the information. Justin got them in just in time for the Bend for Haiti Benefit Concert and Afterparty which he organized all the musical talent for. As he passed them out he had amazing reactions. Chris Chabot - Live at the Kilns

Chris Chabot played at the Kilns Bookstore a few weeks back. It was, in my opinion, one of those shows most of Bend should be kicking itself for missing. Chris and his band sounded amazing as they worked through most of his new album. With his black jacket and a harmonica around his neck, Chris at moments had an eerie resemblance to Johnny Cash and musically covered the same vast emotional territory and personal transparency as The Man in Black's later works. Here are a few photos from that night.

Erin Cole-Baker had her CD release party here in Bend a few months back at the Historic Liberty Theater. It was a beautiful evening celebrating the release of her new album while on a short break between touring France and heading to New Zealand. I was able to help Erin with designing the posters and tickets for her CD release party as well as make her a four foot tall, six foot wide vinyl banner for her merchandise section that featured three of her new promotional images we shot her for. Hope for Haiti

Today I was given the opportunity to do a flyer for World Relief / World Relief Next for their Haiti response work. This potentially will be sent out to churches all across the country and some big names are potentially getting behind World Relief to lend their hands. I am super excited to see people come together like this and am so glad I was able to be a part of it.

World Relief is an amazing organization. They have a strong history of relief work all over the world, including fifteen years in Haiti. By Thursday, two days after the earthquake, they already had a team on the ground. Check them out, tell your friends, keep up on what they are doing. A New Look

Things have been taking on a bit of a new look around here. The most obvious to all of you would be the new blog design. Things have to look a nice and tidy with a bit of an edge to match our style. We also have reworked our identity to better position ourselves in the Bend, Oregon photography and graphic design scene. It's a rough market out there and you have to be slick to stand out.

Here's a little look at how this all went down.

My identity literally was the first legitimate, full-on identity project I took on. I was showing my portfolio to a branding agency in Chicago to get on their freelancing list, and if you are showing your work to a branding agency, you need a brand. The crossed Q was an outgrowth from my signature and the plus was meant to emphasize my multidisciplined skill set. There was not too much more to it than that. Over time I actually grew into my branding, but that is a backwards process. I was young, but I've learned. So here we are a little bit further down the road and my branding no longer fits. I've grown beyond it. That's what happens when you don't do things right. Trust me, I'm not the first. Many visual artists are faced with having to update or fully redo their identity for the very same reasons. We work so hard to stretch ourselves to make everyone else look good and we fall to the side. I had fallen to the same fate.

So here it is - the new A. Querio Photo + Design identity. It's bolder, it's sharper, it's even cleaner, and most of all, it's more A. Querio.

Here's why this is us. Using the cross alone did not distinguish us from the myriad of organizations that use it as a primary mark. We however did not want to desert it entirely, because it was our primary mark. Over time It has come to symbolize how we at A. Querio do it right. Adding the AQ before the cross tied it to my personal identity as the founder. It also gave it much more of a bold, sharp edge which defines our style. We are very Swiss in style, but not necessarily safe. The addition of the AQ also brought more of a typographic element into our mark which is another definitive mark of our style. I was the kid who was always changing his handwriting and getting in trouble with English teachers for using triangles for A's and writing my N's backwards because I liked them that way. I'm telling you, Norway High School tried to smother the typographer right out of me. I think I spent more time designing logos for the bands I was in, and then applying it to merch and such, than we did practicing.

When it came to the logotype there was less room to change things as that was the most recognizable element of our identity. I made improvements to the letter spacing and the size type to give the logotype more balance and a stronger appearance. There were other little changes such as small color shifts and such but the core elements of the logotype remained relatively the same. The Cyan is still there as a little nod to my love of print, because that's how this whole design stuff is meant to be displayed anyways. The gray took on a darker tone, giving it a more dignified and refined feel. It has a sophistication with an undertone of subversion - and that's us. We're like Gene Simmons in a tuxedo. We're classy but we'll still have our share of fun. I kept the white to keep things clean and give the whole package a little polish.

So there you have it - our new look. Watch for it to roll its way across our various means of communication and slowly take over the Bend photography and design scene.

Inside the Studio

Friday night we officially opened up the studio to the public during Downtown Bend's First Friday Art Walk. Below you will find a few pictures of the space, including the little desk lamp I made myself. The A and the Q hanging on the poster wire were from an old shop sign and are going to be used as a dry erase board. The skateboard was an old painting I did in college. I never was god at riding them, but I guess I make them look nice. The pipe below was a nice little gift from my dad, so it was nice to have a little bit of him there too. That black Canon was my first SLR, which belonged to my grandpa. Hey, I like my family.

The gray walls will prevent against color cast when working, which is the symbolic reason behind choosing it for my brand. I am really looking forward to bringing future branding clients up there and being able to show them a practical example of how there is more to a brand than just a logo. I design in a very architectural way, so I chose to decorate with raw materials and clean lines that reflect my very Swiss influenced style. Oh, and who can pass up an exposed brick wall? You just don't get those in Bend. It reminds me of Chicago and keeps me balanced.

Antioch Church - Elders Newsletter

I recently designed a little 10 page booklet for Antioch Church which served as the newest form of official communication from the Elder Board. This project was a little out of my norm, but strengthened my design skills in many areas. I had to take strait text and convert it into a visual stimulating piece while matching the updated branding that was released a week prior. The only source I had to the updated branding were proof copies of the new bulletin. I sat there with a ruler measuring out margins and trying to fill in what would match for any unknown criteria.

I was faced with the trial of making an informative piece of literature be visual stimulating and accessible while still keeping an official feel to it; images, pull quotes, and infographics served to bridge that gap. For my first attempt at an official quarterly report I am very please with the final product.

FOUR Volume 2 Issue 1

If you know me personally and have recently been wondering about my sanity and temporary status as a recluse, it all had to do with this one little project: FOUR Volume 1 Issue 2. Four is a biannual publication put out by Anitoch Church in Bend, OR to serve as an internal communication piece that will actually be read. I was the Chief Designer on this issue and Caitlin, along with Matt Smith served as Chief Editors. Below are some shots of this issue, including illustrations I did to match our current favorite song A Stick, A Carrot and String by mewithoutYou.

Annie Bethancourt at the Kilns

Annie Bethancourt recently played at the Kilns here in Bend. Robert Jon and his band came back up this way too. Annie has played the Kilns three times now, growing so much in her song-writing and performance between each appearance. Robert Jon was the headliner at what I believe was the very first official Kilns Concert Series event. Both musicians are showing excellent growth and simply put on an excellent show. PARADIGM ARTISTS GROUP

Don't worry friends, I have not been a lazy sack of puss for the past month and a half. I have recently joined PARADIGM ARTISTS GROUP, a super cool artist management group here in the Pacific North West. We have offices in Downtown Bend on Wall Street, right above Local Joe and Great Outdoor Clothing. I have been focusing much of my energy on getting my personal office space set up and doing a few projects for the organization. There are some very exciting things happening over here at A. Querio Photo + Design, so keep your eyes open. There will be a little online friend tour of the space coming up soon.

PARADOX

Antioch's college group is now under new leadership and a with that comes a new identity. When Matt Smith and I sat down to start talking about the branding for PARADOX a few things became clear. First, we wanted a visual division between para (beyond) and dox (belief) to emphasize that separation. Second, we wanted something leaning toward the clean but edgy side of things. Third, we when discussing potential icons Matt read me the manifesto of PARADOX and the concept of an "upsidedown kingdom" stood out to both of us. So here she is; the new PARADOX logo (with more fun to come later in print collateral).

I went for a blackletter/ambigram style on the letter to play towards the confusion and puzzle of a paradox. This also enabled me to divide para and dox but also intertwine the two words. The break on the "P" gives the allusion to a question mark, while its dot and the crown off the "a" are incorportated as caligrapher's flourishes. Placing the large crown behind the text gives depth to the logo while also showing how the crown icon can be used on it's own.

Rootdown Posters

Rootdown is coming back to the Kilns! This was a super fun and ambitious poster design project. All three performs' names were handmade in Illustrator with no source font at all. It started with a paper sketch and then was rebuilt entirely from scratch. If you are unfamiliar with Rootdown they are a super cool reggee act from Euguene, Oregon, fronted by Paul Wright who is a stellar musician on his own. I actually had the opportunity to see the whole band again last night and they were super tight and had a great stage presence. Do yourself a huge favor and drop the ten bucks to see these guys with two other great bands. Let's be honest, where else should you be on a Sunday night in October in Bend?

Elliot Concert Poster

I just finalized the poster for Elliot (Bend, Oregon's favorite spacey, eruorockish heartthrobs) and Erin Cole-Baker's upcoming concert at the Kilns Bookstore. Elliot's visual style is very spacey and I had a ton of fun figuring out how to capture that in a screenprintable style. Here is what I ended up with.

I love the super textural look of this freakin' huge, super textural moon looming over this poster. The dark gray on black and overwhelming feel really reflects the power and stage presence of this band. Check out their music video and the free download on their website: www.elliotband.com.

Photographer, Groomsman, & Teary, Proud Brother

We recently had the honor of doing as much photography one can do while being in the wedding party. Caitlin and I both stood in my little sister and new brother-in-law's wedding and shot as much as we could without having the cameras up there with us. It has extremely intimidating to shoot for a someone so close to us on such a big day. Jessie is one of the top students her class at a well-known Art school, so there was just a little pressure on us with this one. Oh, and my high school art teacher was he primary photographer, since we were standing. Yeah, this one was a bit of a nerve-wrecker; just try shooting when your teary.

Here's a little look at how things turned out.

Jessie always has maintained this sense of simple classic beauty in all she has done and my mom when comparing Jessie and Jake's wedding to mine and Caitlin's pointed out how both really captured the style of each couple and their relationship; Jessie and Jake's being very sweet and romantic. I really feel that these images capture that very important aspect of Jessie and Jake's wedding.

Congratulations Jessie and Jake, we love you very much and are so thankful for how happy you clearly are together.

PawnShop kings

Go ahead and add Illustration to my title friends. Below you will find my most labor intensive concert poster to date.

Everything on here is hand illustrated, except for the header bar and the Kilns Concert Series logo. After everything was drawn I converted it into digital versions of each speaker cab item individually so I could play with the colors in the final copy. If you are in Bend on Sunday, June 21 head over to the Kilns and check these guys out. I saw them last fall and they are great. Sadly, I will not be there.

New Branding Projects

Lately I have been working on doing some branding projects. I thought you little web friends would be interested in seeing how they have been coming along.

Mr. Fixie's Cycle Shop is a yet to open custom fixed-gear bicycle shop in Pittsburgh, PA. This project allowed me the most freedom to play. Doug Cook, Mr. Fixie himself, came to me with just the name Mr. Fixie's and let me run free. Immediately my mind jumped to classic barbershops. As I worked with building the logo I soon realized the origonal name too simplistic to have stick in the clients' mind so I talked to Doug about expanding the name to include "cycle shop" and he agreed completely. The elements of this logo all incorporate a few themes: classic barbershops, bicycle culture, and Pittsburgh. The font expresses elegence. The embelishment below "Mr. Fixie's" is refelective of a mustache and a tongue-in-cheek nod to mustache bars. The crossed hammer and wrench and tools that would be used both by steelworkers and bike builders, expressing the stability of a bike made by Mr. Fixie. The colors chosen are rich, but faded red, cream, and blue to express a sense of heritage behind Pensylvania. All of Mr. Fixie's Cycle Shop branding is meant to tell the customer, "Hey, a custom bike might not be the cheapest option, but I am getting a unique and dependable bike."
I have, as you already know, been doing all the design work for The Kilns Concert Series here in Bend, OR. Eventally a general icon became necessary for all the marketing efforts. The primary objective of this icon was to be general enough to cover a wide range of styles, able to be printed in small sizes on posters, and reflect The Kilns Bookstore in some way. The main way this reflects The Kilns Bookstore is in the assenders. The Kilns Bookstore sits just above the Old Mill in Bend, which is most recognized by three large smoke stacks. The ascenders are meant to be a nod to those as well as to hint at the volume bars on a mixer board.Katie Syme is a makeup artist working here in Bend as well. Katie came to me with the keywords of "elegence" and "rockstar." The most obvious element for those two terms was the color. Plum has such a rich feel to it and has long been conected to royalty. There also is an edge to it when combined with black and white. A complimentary tone was also chosen for when a softer image was required in marketing. The font chosen enabled the the icon to maintain a strong element of youthful femininity alongside the elegence and subtle edge the dominate the style.

We recently finished work on the new issue of FOUR for Antioch Church here in Bend. This one kills the launch issue. It's bigger and better in so many ways. Here's a little cover shot from this 24 page baby of goodness.

We have all kinds of crazy cool articles in this guy. Human Rights and the Church, The Congo, The Kilns Bookstore, Arts, Solitude, the Kilns Concert Series, the Kilns Open Mic, the interns, and a little artist corner featuring my piece based on Micah 6:8.

A Gift From Us

I made these little babies for the new year. Yes, I rang in the new year as any good designer would; I made calendars. Now they are yours to download, print, and organize your life. I know it's a little late to give away calendars, but you were getting sick of your old one anyways. It's okay, you can admit it.

These little guys are 11x17 so you will need to either shrink them down, find some bigger paper, or send them off to your favorite print shop. Hey, I'm not doing all the work for you.
